What is Ask URN?
Ask URN is an automated assistant that helps you find free and low-cost legal help in Utah. It is a computer program - not a lawyer, and not a person. It can point you to organizations, phone numbers, court self-help services, and guides.
Am I talking to a real person?
No. Ask URN is automated. To reach a human, sign up for a free legal clinic using the Sign up for legal clinic link, call the Utah Courts Self-Help Center at 888-683-0009, or call Utah Legal Services at 801-328-8891.
Can Ask URN give me legal advice?
No. Ask URN gives general information and referrals only. It will not tell you what to do in your case, predict what a judge will do, interpret how a law applies to you, or calculate a deadline. Those answers must come from a lawyer or the court.
I need a lawyer. What will Ask URN do?
It will send you to licensedlawyer.org, the Utah State Bar's public directory, where you can search for and contact a licensed Utah attorney yourself. The Utah State Bar does not recommend specific lawyers or provide legal advice under its ethics rules, and there is no guarantee of eligibility or that services will be provided.
Is what I type private?
There are no accounts and no names, and this application does not save your conversation. Your message is transmitted to an AI provider to generate the reply. Please do not type your full name, address, date of birth, case number, immigration status, or account numbers. See the privacy page for details.
Can I keep a copy of an answer?
Yes. When Ask URN has finished writing an answer, a Save to my device button appears beneath it and saves that answer as a PDF you can keep, print, or bring to an appointment.
What if this is an emergency or I am in danger?
Call 911 if you are in immediate danger. For domestic violence, call the Utah Domestic Violence LINKLine at 1-800-897-5465 (free, 24/7). For a mental health crisis, call or text 988. Ask URN answers these questions with hotline numbers, not with advice.
I have a court date or was served papers. Can Ask URN tell me my deadline?
No. Ask URN never states or calculates a legal deadline. Utah deadlines - eviction especially - are short and strict. Call the Utah Courts Self-Help Center at 888-683-0009 or Utah Legal Services at 801-328-8891 the same day.
Does it cost anything?
No. This site is free to use, and the organizations listed are free or low-cost. Each organization decides who it can serve, so being listed here is not a promise of eligibility or service. Our guide to qualifying for free legal aid explains the income limits and how to apply.
Can I use Ask URN in Spanish?
Yes. Switch the language to Español at the top of the page and Ask URN replies in Spanish. Spanish text on this site is a working translation; for anything critical, confirm with a bilingual person at the organization you call.
Where do the listings come from and how current are they?
Listings come from published Utah court, government, and nonprofit sources, and each card shows the date it was last checked. See how we verify. If something is wrong, use the Report a problem link on the listing.
What if Ask URN does not know the answer?
It will say it does not have that verified and give you a phone number a person answers, rather than guessing at a rule, a fee, or a phone number.
